Coach Samantha Read is Grassroots Coach of the Year

We would like to congratulate Caltaf Head Cheetah Coach Samantha Read on being named the Athletics Alberta 2015 Grassroots Coaches of the Year. Samantha and the Cheetah coaching staff have worked tirelessly to create the premier track and field program for athletes ages 8-11 in Alberta. Congratulations!

Modified Rules for Field Events
Standing Long Jump –3 consecutive jumps and the best jump will be measured
Ball Throw –3 consecutive throws and the best throw will be measured
Long Jump – 3 Jumps from a 1m take-off area, measured from the take-off point

High School Provincials 2016
So as the dust settles on another high school track season, Caltaf athletes boast about having one of their best High School Seasons ever. The medals were collected by hurdlers, jumpers, sprinters, throwers and distance runners. Congrats to all the athletes and special thanks and acknowledgments to both their Caltaf and High School Coaches.

Siri Svensson: New Caltaf Cheetah Head Coach

We are delighted to announce that Siri Svensson has been hired as the new Head Coach of the Caltaf Cheetah Program. Siri has been coaching with the Cheetahs for 3 years and we are very excited that she has agreed to expand her role. Siri has actually been with Caltaf for 10 years, first as a throws athlete and then as a Senior Coach for the Cheetah Program. She is currently in her third year at Mount Royal University in the Health and Physical Education Program. She has her NCCP Level 2 and was most recently an assistant coach for the overall winner Zone 3 Team at the Alberta Summer Games. She loves coaching the Cheetah athletes. The Cheetah Program was where she developed her love for coaching track and field and she wants this passion and love of the sport to be passed onto generations to come.

Samantha Read: New Head Coach of Caltaf Junior Development

Caltaf is excited to announce that Samantha Read is the new Head Coach of our Junior Development Program! Samantha has most recently been the Head Coach for the Caltaf Cheetah Program and we are thrilled that she has agreed to move to JD.

Samantha Read competed for Caltaf in the sprints and middle distance events. She competed for the U of C Dino’s (1988 -1993), and was a member of the 1991 National Championship team, earning All Canadian status that year. She then moved to the United States and competed for the Nike Farm Team (1996-2001) in the middle distance events.

While living in the United States she was the Head Track and Field and Cross Country Coach at Mountain View High School in Mountain View, California (1996-2006). In her time there she was named the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Honor Coach in 2001 (Girls Cross Country), 2005 (Girls Cross Country) and 2006 (Girls & Boys Track and Field).

Sam and her Cheetah coaching staff have had great success. In 2015 Sam was named Grassroots Coach of the Year by Athletics Alberta. She is very proud of the growth of the Cheetahs program and seeing the sea of Red Cheetah t-shirts at all the Meets. She is also very proud that there were 12 Cheetahs Nominated for the 2015 Athletics Alberta Awards.

Sam was most recently named the Head Coach for the Zone 3 Summer Games Team. Sam continues on with her coach’s education and is now attained her NCCP Level 2 and is currently working on her Level 3.

We are pleased to announce that Caltaf Coach Kim Cousins and Caltaf Athletes Jennifer Brown and Alister McQueen have been named to the 2016 Rio Paralympic Track and Field Team! Jenn will be competing in women’s discus throw. Alister will be competing in men’s javelin and Kim has been named as the head throws coach.

Congratulations to all!

Caltaf’s own Alister McQueen and Jennifer Brown together with Caltaf coach Kim Cousins, competed at the Rio Paralympic Games.

Caltaf would like to congratulate Alister McQueen and coach Kim Cousins on Alister’s Silver Medal win at the Rio Paralympics. Alister was ranked 12th entering the Men’s Javelin event and threw three personal bests to throw a new Canadian Record for a come from behind silver medal.

Caltaf would also like to congratulate Jennifer Brown, also coached by Kim Cousins on her great performance, finishing 7th in Women’s Discus.

Les Grammatik joins Caltaf as Technical Director

On behalf of the Caltaf Board of Directors and Caltaf Coaching Staff, we are excited to announce that Les Grammatik has joined our coaching team as Technical Director for Caltaf, effective immediately.

Caltaf is one of the largest and most dominant athletics clubs in the province. Caltaf has also been making impacts on the national scene. Les’s hiring is an important part of our club’s ongoing expansion and commitment to providing support to our current coaching staff.

Les started his athletic career in the Sports School System in Romania becoming an elite athlete and international pole vaulter. He has been coaching for 44 years, has been selected to coach with the Canadian National Team including a Head Coaching role at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His involvement in athletics also includes all levels of coaching education from NCCP to NCI, a lecturer at the University of Calgary, and provider of numerous clinics around the world for both coaches and athletes. He is a six-time Canada West Universities Athletic Association Coach of the year and 11-time Alberta High-Performance Coach of the Year.

Les is a globally recognized coach making his mark in Canada by coaching two of the country’s most successful multievent athletics athletes in history, Jessica Zelinka and Michael Smith. He is also a leader in developing education programs, including the creation of writing the Competition Development curriculum for athletics. He was a key member of a group of experts in developing the Long-Term Athlete Development model for Athletics Canada. He has also lectured internationally on various subjects from athletic program planning to strength training.

Caltaf is happy to be able to bring Les on board at such an exciting time. There is an amazing enthusiasm around our club; we have a clear drive and vision to become a leading track and field club in the country. Les’s skillset and experience will bring club-wide benefits to our coaches and athletes as we enhance our investment in building our internal programs and expanding our presence. Les will provide support to our coaching staff and assist in further program development, including an expansion of our Junior Development and Cheetah Programs.

Cheetahs Session #3 Dates

Cheetahs Session #3 will run April 16 to 21. This session will focus on learning the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing using age appropriate progressions. The program will be held indoors. Through a fun and active learning environment, skills learned in this program will create a strong foundation for success in both Track and Field and other sports and physical activities. This program will have several opportunities to compete at track and field meets in Calgary. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete at meet in Calgary including Caltaf Track Classic.
